Let’s begin with the Communal Reading for September. The month ahead wants us to Be Here Now:
The flower cards I pulled for the collective for September are Honeysuckle + Forget-Me-Not + Redbud, along with the 6 of Cups and 8 of Cups reversed.
The flowers of this month tell a strong story together: be with what is, how it is right now. Look at all the little ways we avoid what is causing pain. We can’t necessarily escape from the present the way we used to, and we will mine the emotional treasures that come from staying here, being here, feeling all that is here. There is a lot of beauty in the present if we start to unwind it from tendrils of the past and from expectations of how Now should look.
Honeysuckle is one of the original essences discovered and popularized by Dr Edward Bach. It helps bring us into the present, to accept the conditions of our lives as they are now. It’s indicated for periods of life full of nostalgia, longing for a past time when things were - in our minds at least - better or easier. It’s for when we are viewing the past through a lens of longing, distorting the past even - into a time without issue, or with less burden. It’s also for periods of hard times - when there truly have been better times and we know it. It helps us to see things clearly, knowing that ups and downs will always be present, and that there’s a lot of sweet joy to be had right now. I get much more in-depth on this one and all the others in the pod, including my personal experience working with it. So head there for more!
Forget-Me-Not is all about bringing mindfulness to one’s relationships, noticing karma, patterns, and the ways we show up. It also opens us up to see all the relationships we have and the support we receive from beings beyond the human. Forget-Me-Not invites you to see how it feels to be in relationship with the flowers in your garden, your animal companions, your ancestors who are no longer here. Connecting with these beings may fill you up in different ways than getting coffee with a friend. Spending time in nature may transmute feelings of loneliness into feeling super supported. Play around with it! How connected can you feel if you try to connect with people or beings outside of your typical social and familial circle? This flower helps us feel knit up tight and cozy into the fabric of humanity and of all things. We are NEVER alone (cue the horror movie music). So take heart, and reach out in new ways!
Redbud joins the choir of “accept what is” that we’re receiving this month. This essence is known for helping us accept the cycle and circle of life - the aging process, the processes of regeneration, death, and birth. The ways those cycles show up in our lives. In a practical sense, it helps us accept the body’s changes as we get older, to accept its waxing and waning in times of sickness and health. To accept that we cannot preserve ourselves in some kind of static sameness forever. Redbud came forward to be the central essence of my blend last month through pulling flower cards. My ego said, excuse me?? I have more important pressing issues to attend to. You want me to focus on not worrying about getting older and care less about finding the perfect skincare routine? Meanwhile, the joke is on me, because underneath all of the superficial aesthetics of the anti-aging industrial complex, is the actual big ole literal fear of death. Um, pretty weighty, pretty major, and ripple effects abound from rewiring our relationship that ole chestnut. If the theme of the month is Acceptance, then starting from within is the most powerful and perhaps hardest domain in which to exercise acceptance.
One final thread I don’t feel like I’ve spoken to fully yet. And allow me to get very Pansexual for a hot sec. There’s a real, “being with what is” energy that can also be applied to our preferences this month - letting new things and our delight for them surprise us, letting something that doesn’t give us pleasure anymore but used to, go on the back burner. In a sense, it’s about applying what resonates with us against our code of ethics - and if it passes that check, go with it, and allow things to come as they want to come ;). No good, no bad, just vibes, protected by that guardrail of personal ethics. Being with what is isn’t just a Hanged One energy of gritting our teeth, raw-dogging the cold, harsh reality of the present (please, have a sugary soda on your next flight instead of staring blankly ahead for Tik Tok). The here and now this month can be a goddamn pleasure soup, where we get delighted by the funky fresh little things that titillate us as we are now, old preferences be damned.
Flowerscopes for September
Hot tip: Read the flower for your rising sign or your big three. These ‘scopes were created using the Flower Essence Society flower deck (including every Flower Essence in my kit) and Tarot cards from the Thoth deck. Learn more about what flower essences are here.
Aries 🌺 Snapdragon + 5 of Cups
An Aries-coded flower for an Aries-coded human. Snapdragon is all about strong physical presence, vitality, and lust for life (and just plain lust). How will you harness your immense power this month? If you’re likely feeling like you’re on fire, channel it into a creative project, into sensual pleasures, and into words - otherwise it might come out sideways through harsh words and flame somebody. How will you use the massive creative force at your disposal right now? Another aspect to be aware of is how grief and sadness transmute into outward anger - how can all of your strong, righteous feelings be channeled creatively?
Taurus🪻Oregon Grape + Ace of Cups
Expect the best of the new people and new connections that enter your life this month! If you come into situations, expecting that you’ll be well received and that you’ll be able to trust the outcome, you just might be surprised by how much that opens you to new and deep connections. Oregon Grape helps us to realize the falseness of our projections and the ineffectiveness of our defenses. People may pop out of the woodwork to help you on your journey, and if they do - let them!
Gemini 🌼 Downy Avens + Knight of Wands
Anddd the most Gemini-coded flower essence for a Gemini! Downy Avens is all about turning intelligence and knowledge into embodied wisdom. Heart, say hello to head. This may not be news to you, as a heady air sign, but knowing something intellectually isn’t the end all be all. You may find yourself saying, Lauren, I am a genius and know this already. This month, how can you move down from the head into the body and act from that place? This may be a time of getting renewed inspiration and a new point of view on something. It’s an essence that’s often chosen for bored people, looking for intellectual stimulation. Think, thirty tabs open, three online courses you’ve barely looked at, four books on audible but nothing is grabbing you and bringing you into the flow state. If you’re up in the head, feeling dry and crispified, focus on sending a lot of attention to the heart and let it lead the way. Notice what your heart - not your head - is drawn to, what it responds to. Even if it doesn’t make sense, follow it, and the flow will come.
Cancer 🍒 Cherry + Queen of Wands
Mommy of the zodiac meets the childhood essence of the flower realm. Say hello to each other. This is a month to increase your inner passion by doing things that feel authentic to you - and the result might just be buckets of joy. By bringing your inner authenticity outwards, you’ll stoke the fires of your lust for life. More energy, more excitement, more laughs. Daily life is less draining when you’re doing more things that light you up and when you bring your unique flair to the dull tasks that are a part of living. The moment you have a bright idea at work - share it! The goofy joke you hold in and laugh at to yourself - share it! How in love with your life can you get this month when you let it all hang out?
Leo 👼Angel’s Trumpet + 9 of Wands
Deep transformation, tests of faith, occasions that you will rise to meet. Angel’s Trumpet is the essence of profound transformation - of surrendering and easing into great change, of letting things release and leave when needed. It’s also an incredibly peaceful energy - when we know we can face anything, that everything will be turned into wisdom and insight, that we cannot force anything into being - it can feel like a major burden lifted. Let life unfold before you this month, knowing what’s in play is beyond your control - and will reveal the path before you.
Virgo ❤️ Bleeding Heart + Judgement
September is a Heart Cleanse. And I’m not talking about the detoxy, drink eight green juices a day until you sh*t water kind of cleanse. It’s about clearing all the gunk off of an overburdened heart - and clearing the veil of the past, to see relationships for what they are right now. Bleeding Heart really helps us clear away patterns, expectations, hurts, resentments and so on. Give love and support without expectation - and only when you truly know it is unconditional. And this was one of the communal flowers for last month’s reading, so listen to the intro to that podcast ep for a deeper dive.
Libra 🐒 Sticky Monkeyflower + 8 of Swords
Spicy, exploratory, surprising, and dare I say sexy times are ahead. The Monkeyflower family is all about fear - untangling our relationships with it, confronting it, and releasing it. The Sticky flower of the family is also quite literally about opening capacity for physical touch. Sure, it could mean Slut as Praxis (love that for you). But it could also mean pushing the edge of all types of intimacy (also love that for you). 8 of Swords, your card of the month, is also all about being tangled up in the mind’s fear-cage. Step out of that cage and connect! Engaging in any kind of intimacy with another is often the antidote to the mind’s powerful stories. Step out on a limb and see what kind of edge you can push while still staying true to yourself. On the other side is the possibility for deeper intimacy (of all kinds, but yes, also the sexy kinds) that comes from emotional vulnerability and letting yourself be truly seen.
Scorpio 🏵️ Tiger Lily + Knight of Wands
Cooperation over competition. Collaboration instead of taking the reins. It’s a time of Yin recharging over Yang action. And it could be quite delicious and creative and not at all passive but rather an in into your authentic leadership style. A recent theme has been finding your authentic blend of leadership in your world, and when you’re feeling your power you can hold space for others, knowing they can never ruffle your feathers or take the throne you sit in. How can you inspire the other people in your life to fight for the common good or gather them to support you in an upcoming project? You may feel on fire about what you believe in, and you’ll have people in your corner to fight with you and lend their hands and hearts.
Capricorn 🌷 Sweet Pea + The Hierophant
You’re right where you need to be! It’s a time for building connections. This flower is for people who have been traveling a lot, have moved a lot, and are looking to feel deeper roots and connections in community. An interesting exercise could be naming the communities you feel a part of - in your neighborhood, online, and in the context of the world as a whole. How can you get involved in any of these more? Affirming your sense of place could be as simple as joining a new group, learning about the land you live on, volunteering, hosting a potluck, or beautifying your home with native plants and the work of local artisans.
Saggitarius 🌿 Poison Oak + Death
Poison Oak paired with the Death card - it’s giving witchy season. Poison magic, boundary magic. Composting, letting go. Opening space, and letting that space feel open for a while - something new is coming. Let your softer side show this month, be the cat that shows its soft, vulnerable belly as a sign of trust, and you may reap the benefits of a different response begetting a different outcome. Massages, physical touch, noticing what fabrics feel good on the body. The more you build your boundaries, the more you can let people in. Poison Oak is all about protecting yourself versus defending. When you feel safe and secure in yourself, you’ll let people in farther.
Aquarius 🌸 Lilac + Page of Cups
Lilac is all about the positive side of nostalgia, of returning to the past, of revisiting cherished memories. Sometimes you have to dip into the joys of the past to cultivate more joy in the present. Try having a beginner’s mind around your own emotions, and your history. Practice nonattachment to your current narratives, knowing that you may interpret things differently now if you look again with a fresh eye. What positive memories can help bolster you in the here and now? How can you bring your past into the present, whether through a treasured tradition or picking an old favorite hobby back up. In many ways, it may feel like a fresh start lately, so move lightly into a positive new season and enjoy!
Pisces 🌽 Corn Lily + Ace of Pentacles
This is a full circle moment of life, with some phases of life completing and some new beginnings on the horizon. Corn Lily is a beautiful complement to the flowers that came up in the communal reading. As usual, Pisces has their finger on the pulse of the energy of the collective. Being with what is, accepting the march of time and the process of aging and growth. But also, a new opportunity to build the structure of your life! It may be a time of changing objectives and of building anew to align with that new objective. There could be a sense of starting again, of revising, of pivoting. What is a more vital or fresh feeling than an opportunity to start at the beginning of something? Happy building, Pisces!
